Warren Dutton was a visionary who established many high-quality vineyards in the West Sonoma Coast, seeking out Goldridge soils and planting many old clones, importantly Old Wente Chardonnay. The "Sullivan" vineyard is one of dozens of parcels that his sons continue to farm, and it was planted west of Graton to Old Wente Chardonnay around 1980. The mature vines are usually dry-farmed in the lightest of ash-based sands, and the wines they produce are intensely flavored and aromatic, with the characteristic citrus drive and minerality that makes Old Wente so special. This has long been an element of The Sage Chardonnay.
