The 2017 edition of The Sage again comes from early 1980’s Old Wente clone vines in pebbly, volcanic soils and was fermented with native yeasts in a mix of French oak barrels. It is a charmer with a bright, clear straw color and hints of green accompanied by aromatics of citrus, white nectarine, sage, brioche, toast and Jordan almonds. The palate is vivacious and light, while simultaneously rich and velvety. The finish is soft and lingering, with detailed flavors of lemon curd, hazelnut and brioche fanning out but held in check by complimentary acids. This wine packs a lot of hidden energy as it opens up and unfolds in the glass.
