The 2012 is the second vintage of Scarpa to hail from the gorgeous Phoenix Ranch in Napa just north of Coombsville. This gravelly, alluvial site is farmed biodynamically by the fastidious and conscientious Brian Phoenix. The results are simply stunning in this verdant garden of a vineyard. The wine shows true Syrah varietal character on a Napa Valley frame. Look for a deep, blue-black color and aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, white pepper, bacon fat, lavender and dark chocolate. The wine fills your entire mouth with a viscous, layered personality, but remains balanced with airy, floral notes, focused flavors and a lingering impression of sweet fruit.
Wine Spectator March 31, 2015 (92 points) – James Laube A big and rich, yet graceful, expression of Syrah, offering a mix of espresso, wild berry, blackberry, toasty oak, anise, black licorice and mineral notes that sail along on the finish despite the gripping tannins. Best from 2016 through 2028.
The impressive 2012 Syrah Scarpa is a beauty. It is Rhône-like, with lavender, lard, blackberry and black raspberry fruit. The wine is tarry, medium to full-bodied, sweet tannin and a nice, expansive savory mouthfeel. This wine is showing beautifully now and close to full maturity, so drink it over the next 5-6 years.
