The warmest year on record has brought an opulence to Scarpa we haven’t seen since 2012. The mouth-watering aromatics are deep and layered with notes of mulberry, blackberry syrup, oil-cured black olives, milk chocolate and dried thyme. The palate is full-blown and mouth-coating with a complex core of black raspberry, blueberry, graphite, light roast coffee, exotic spice and bourbon vanilla, all framed by the finest tannins we have ever seen at Phoenix. The finish is resounding and long, promising many years of enjoyment.
I loved the 2015 Syrah Scarpa and this sensational Syrah comes from the Phoenix Ranch vineyard in Coombsville. It was completely destemmed, fermented all in stainless steel, and spent 21 months in 40% new barrels. Olive tapenade, smoked meats, pepper, and assorted dark fruits all emerge from this classic, full-bodied, beautifully concentrated Syrah that can be drunk anytime over the coming decade.
Dark and brooding, with expressive blueberry, violet and pepper beef aromas that open to deeply structured blackberry, stony mineral and licorice flavors that persist toward big but polished tannins. Best from 2019 through 2028.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Syrah Scarpa (coming from Coombsville) is scented of blackberries, black currants and dark chocolate with hints of garrigue and tar. Full-bodied, concentrated and possessing a solid backbone of firm, rounded tannins, it fills the mouth with spicy layers and finishes long and perfumed.
