Steve and Betsy Moulds' incredible joie de vivre and attention to detail are on display in this wine, and we feel so fortunate to be here to put their efforts on display. Of course, many years of work and distinct, careful choices came before 2021, but the culmination here is remarkable. Aromas of black plum, blackberry pie, wild blueberries, grilled bread, madagascar vanilla, incense and cedar smolder in the glass, while the palate is hugely lush, rich and layered, with power and grace. A testament to the site, and to our wonderful grower-partner.
The single-varietal 2021 Moulds Cabernet Sauvignon, tasted as a barrel sample, is deep garnet-purple in color. It powers out with notes of blackcurrant pastilles, black raspberries, and boysenberries, followed by hints of tapenade, lilacs, and Ceylon tea. The full-bodied palate is jam packed with energetic black fruits, with firm, fine-grained tannins and amazing tension, leading to a long and earthy finish on this fabulous wine.
This Oak Knoll vineyard has yielded a terrific 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Moulds, boasting scents of camphor, black cherries, cassis, vanilla and cedar. It's full-bodied and rich, concentrated and smooth, with greater silkiness than the other Relic 2021s and more length and intensity as well. Wow.
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Moulds Vineyard is all varietal and comes from a site in the Oak Knoll District, in the southern end of the valley. Spiced red and black cherries, candied violets, and incense notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, elegant Cabernet offering fine tannins and a solid mix of both richness and elegance. The tannins here are top-notch, and it's going to offer pleasure for at least 10-15 years.
